Get ready for a Technology filled weekend. Make sure you bring your laptops with you. Word Documents, Excel Spread Sheets, and Outlook; malware history, malware types and how to protect your computer; backup strategies for mobile and home users are just some of the things you will learn in our Technology seminars presented by Quinn Copeland. He also has the very distinguished privilege of being the husband of our newest Convention Coordinator, Dannielle Cox Copeland!
Have you always wanted to do realtime, but have made every excuse not to hook up? Do you do realtime for yourself, but are uncomfortable doing it for others? Now is the time to conquer your fear and to showcase your talent. Join Karla Sommer and Lisa Weber as they share their realtime journey, as well as offer tips and inspiration to motivate you to begin your realtime adventure! Karla and Lisa will walk us through the “scary” process of realtiming for not only yourself, but going beyond your comfort zone and showcasing your skills for others. They will help you expand your comfort zone!
STUDENT SEMINARS
Students, members of WCRA will be offering seminars on Saturday morning of the upcoming convention in Sheboygan specifically for you. You may ask questions of a panel of CART reporters, captioners, freelance, and officials. The second session there will be a mock deposition and what to bring to the job. Register with Dannielle Cox at dannielle.cox@gmail.com and inquire about convention sponsorships. The seminars will be conducted by a great team of reporters: Mary Burzynski, Tom Malkiewicz, Karen Ruud, Taunia Northouse, and Lindsay DeWaide. EXPECT SURPRISES and PRIZES!
We will finish our technology weekend with Eric Szatskowksi presenting The Dark Side of Digital Technology: the Internet, Cell Phones, and Social Media.
Eric has been a Special Agent with the Wisconsin Department of Justice/ Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for approximately 20 years. He’s currently assigned to the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in Milwaukee. Eric’s law enforcement experience also includes undercover murder-for-hire, homicide, cold-case homicides, tracking fugitives, and drug enforcement.
While digital technology offers a world of educational and entertainment options for young people, it also has a dark and dangerous side we must be aware of. This presentation on the digital exploitation of children includes real-life examples and unabashed practical advice for anyone interested in the safety and well-being of our children online or using their cell phones. Eric pulls-no-punches as he also incorporates his experience as a husband and father of two children who grew up online.
Attendees will learn techniques used by predators, the types of kids who are most vulnerable, and the link between the growing victimization of children and the sexualized, porn-obsessed culture. Eric also provides a live, eye-opening demonstration of what takes place in chat rooms.
Sunday morning we will begin the day with an energetic and humorous speaker, Roger Fish. Roger’s enthusiastic, humorous and positive delivery style will challenge you to pursue a positive outlook on life and its many challenges. His philosophy of building strong relationships – both professional and personal – along with his belief that “It’s your attitude, it’s your day . . . make it a good one” will set you on a course of accountability for your life. If you are not “humor impaired” you will leave with a smile on your face. Roger guarantees to make a difference or you can have your old frustrations back!
We will close the weekend with Sharon Abel. Sharon is an instructor for Lakeshore Technical College, has been responsible for the Adult Basic Education for the Incarcerated Project in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, since 1991. Her commitment to correctional education has made her program a model for others to emulate. Her research on post-release inmates, funding sources, and diversity has been published in professional journals.
Bring along your questions. Thanks to her students (current and former inmates of Sheboygan County,) Sharon Abel has over twenty years of stories from which to draw her answers.

SPONSOR-A-STUDENT
WCRA will be conducting two student seminars at the convention in Sheboygan. They will include a mock deposition, a panel of freelancers, CART, captioners, and officials, and more. We hope to make these seminars informative, exciting, and well attended. However, student funding has been cut dramatically. The students need sponsors. Your donation of the $40 student convention fee, or even a portion thereof, would be greatly appreciated. Please check the “student sponsor” area on your registration form. You may also contact Dannielle Cox at dannielle.cox@gmail.com and let her know you will be a sponsor.
Students are the future of the stenographic profession!
